Wantage & Grove NHPT are receiving reports of youths regularly fishing in Letcombe Brook on Mill Street, Wantage, despite fishing not being allowed in the area. The brook is a special chalk stream and home to important wildlife including brown trout, kingfishers, water voles, and otters. Some of the wildlife around the brook is protected, and the habitat is carefully managed. Youngsters are also being reminded that Lockinge Estate is private land and fishing is not permitted without permission. Fishing rights belong to the landowner or fishing-rights holder, and permission is required before casting a line. For those wanting to get into fishing, there are alternative spots such as public fisheries, angling club waters, and commercial fishing lakes, as long as permission has been granted. Under 13s do not need a rod licence, while ages 13 to 16 need a free junior rod licence. Police are urging youngsters to enjoy fishing in the right places and with the proper permission. They also remind them to be respectful when approached by someone pointing out they are fishing in a prohibited area.
