Reports of QR code scams have increased by around 112% in just one year, with criminals increasingly using fake QR codes to steal people’s personal and banking information. This type of scam is known as “quishing” – QR code phishing. Criminals can place a fake QR code sticker over a genuine one, directing you to a convincing-looking fraudulent website where you may be asked to enter your card or personal details. To stay safe, be particularly vigilant when scanning QR codes in public places, including: Check whether the QR code looks like a sticker that has been placed over another code. Check the website address carefully before entering any information. Be extremely cautious if you’re asked for bank or card details. Where possible, use the company’s official app or website rather than scanning a QR code to make a payment. If something doesn’t look right – don’t scan it. A few seconds checking a QR code could prevent your personal and financial information falling into the hands of criminals.
