Reading Borough Council has made a digital stop smoking app, Smoke Free, freely available to Reading residents. The app provides round-the-clock support to quit smoking and has been clinically proven to more than double a smoker’s chance of quitting.

The app offers a similar treatment programme to face-to-face services, combining certified advisor support with evidence-based digital tools. It has been found effective in four clinical trials, with quit rates comparable to those of face-to-face services. Features of the app include certified advisor support and evidence-based digital tools, accessible anywhere and at any time.

The launch of the app comes as Reading celebrates a significant milestone in public health, with smoking rates falling below 10% for the first time, to 9.3% in 2024. Councillor Rachel Eden, Lead Member for Public Health, said:

We’ve already made huge progress in supporting residents to quit smoking, with rates falling below 10% for the first time. This new digital service means even more people can access the support they need to quit, whenever and wherever suits them.

Councillor Eden added:

We know it’s not always easy to attend face-to-face appointments, especially if you work shifts or have caring responsibilities. This app brings expert support directly to your phone, with advisors available around the clock. And it comes at a landmark moment for public health.
